Sometimes a phone can freeze for no clear reason. While it’s annoying, the issue is often easy to fix by restarting the device also called a reboot or soft reset. This refreshes your phone without deleting any of your photos, apps, or settings.
Soft Reset (Restart) Your Android Phone:
If your phone freezes, press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds until it restarts.
If problems persist, you may need to perform a factory reset a more serious step that erases all data on your device and restores it to its original manufacturer settings. This process, sometimes called a hard reset or formatting, does not revert your phone to an older Android version. Once your OS is updated, it cannot be rolled back.
Factory Reset from the Settings Menu
Warning: A factory reset will erase everything on your phone’s internal storage, including photos, files, and apps. Back up your data first.
General steps (varies by device):
1. Go to Settings Backup & reset Factory data reset Reset phone.
2. Enter your passcode when prompted.
3. Tap Erase everything.
4. When finished, reboot your phone and restore your data.
On Google Pixel and Other Stock Android Devices:
1. Go to Settings and scroll down to System.
2. Tap System Reset.
3. Select Erase all data (factory reset).
4. Review the list of items to be erased, then tap Reset phone Delete all data.
On Samsung Devices:
1. Open Settings General Management.
2. Tap Reset at the bottom.
3. Choose Factory data reset.
4. Review the list of accounts, apps, and data to be erased.
5. Scroll down and tap Reset to confirm.
Alternatives to a Full Factory Reset
If you’re experiencing minor problems, try these less drastic options first:
Reset settings: Restores default settings for all system and manufacturer apps, without affecting personal data, security, language, or account settings.
Reset network settings: Resets all Wi-Fi, mobile data, and Bluetooth configurations. Make sure you have your Wi-Fi password saved elsewhere before doing this.
Tip: If you can’t find the factory reset option, use your phone’s Settings search bar and type “factory reset.”
