How to create windows partitions

Welcome to Andasonmajid Tech!

Today, I will take you through a step-by-step guide on how to create a partition on your computer hard drive if you are using the Windows Operating System.

When you buy a new computer, it usually comes with a single partition on the hard drive. This single partition contains both your Operating System (OS) and all of your personal data. While this might seem convenient, it is not the best option for data security.

Here’s why:

If your OS becomes corrupted, there is a high chance you could lose all of your personal files since they are stored in the same partition as the system.

Separating your system files from your personal files helps in better data organization, security, and backup management.

To solve this, you can create separate partitions on your hard drive. For example:

One partition can be used for the Windows OS and installed software.

Another partition can be used to store your documents, pictures, music, and other personal files.

Now let’s go step by step on how to create a new partition in Windows.

Step 1: Open Disk Management

On your desktop, go to This PC (or My Computer in older Windows versions).

Right-click on This PC and then click Manage.

A new window called Computer Management will open.

Step 2: Access Disk Management

On the left-hand side of the Computer Management window, look under the section called Storage.

Click on Disk Management.

You will now see a list of all the partitions available on your computer, including the system partition (usually C:) and any other drives.

Step 3: Shrink an Existing Partition

Decide which partition you want to split (commonly the C: drive).

Right-click on that partition and select Shrink Volume.

A pop-up window will appear asking you to enter the amount of space to shrink.

Enter the size (in MB) that you want for your new partition.

For example, if you want to create a 100 GB partition, enter 102400 MB (since 1 GB = 1024 MB).

Click Shrink.

After shrinking, you will see a new section labeled Unallocated Space in Disk Management.

Step 4: Create a New Partition (Volume)

Right-click on the Unallocated Space.

Select New Simple Volume.

The New Simple Volume Wizard will open. Follow these steps:

Click Next.

Enter the size of the new partition (you can use the maximum size available).

Assign a Drive Letter (for example, D: or E:).

Enter a Volume Label (you can name it anything like “Data” or just leave it as “New Volume”).

Choose the File System (NTFS is recommended).

Click Finish.

Step 5: Verify the New Partition

Once the wizard completes, your new partition will be created and will appear in This PC alongside your existing drives.

You will now see two (or more) partitions.

You can start using the new partition to store your personal files separately from your Windows system files.

Conclusion

Creating partitions is one of the best practices to keep your data safe and organized. In case your system becomes corrupted, and you need to reinstall Windows, your personal files on the other partition will remain safe.

By following the above steps, you can easily create additional partitions on your computer without using any third-party software.

Now, you have learned how to create a new partition on your computer running Windows. I recommend you always keep at least two partitions: one for the OS and one for your personal data.

Thank you very much
